Raytheon hosts 90 Massachusetts classroom field trips in celebration of its 90th anniversary
Field trips with experiential learning opportunities bring science, technology, engineering and math concepts to life
WALTHAM, Mass., Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its 90th anniversary celebration, Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) is sponsoring field trips for 90 Massachusetts classrooms to experience interactive math and science exhibits at the Museum of Science, Boston and The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon. Raytheon will host the classrooms throughout the fall semester to help inspire students to pursue science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and career opportunities.
"As Raytheon celebrates its 90th anniversary, we look to fuel the next 90 years of innovation by engaging students in STEM and showcasing the limitless possibilities for exciting and challenging careers," said Pamela Erickson, Raytheon's vice president of Community Relations. "It is important for students to have hands-on experiences to understand the link between STEM and their favorite activities and hobbies – demonstrating how math and science move the world."
Raytheon's longstanding partner, the Museum of Science, Boston, offers experiential learning opportunities in a wide range of STEM subjects. Through hundreds of interactive exhibits, live presentations, lectures, films and shows at the Charles Hayden Planetarium and the Mugar Omni Theater, the Museum of Science fosters lifelong curiosity in science and technology.
The interactive exhibits include "Beyond the X-ray," featuring five different medical imaging technologies. The live presentations include "Behind the Headline," which highlights exciting science and technology stories in the news. The museum's recently renovated Charles Hayden Planetarium – the most technologically advanced digital theater in New England – showcases its award-winning show, "Undiscovered Worlds: The Search Beyond our Sun." Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Mugar Omni Theater uses a five-story-tall IMAX® Dome screen and a state-of-the-art digital sound system to offer viewers unrivaled immersive experiences.
The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon showcases math and science in exciting and unexpected ways – through games and exhibits that highlight math, science and football. Raytheon's football-themed interactive game show, called "In the Numbers," asks contestants math and science questions pertaining to the sport. After correctly answering a question, contestants move forward 5, 10 or 15 yards, depending on the question's difficulty. The first contestant whose player reaches the end zone for a touchdown is the winner.
The Hall also offers students fun, hands-on learning through STEM-related modules that connect different aspects of football to math and science. Raytheon sponsors the Patriots' math curriculum and works with the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation to develop educational outreach programs throughout New England, including the annual "Science of Sports" Science Fair.
