Pie for Pi Day: Festivities serve up math and science fun to students nationwide

Raytheon delivers pies to Boys & Girls Clubs across the country to highlight STEM education

WALTHAM, Mass., March 10, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- No matter how they slice it, it all adds up to fun for students learning the importance of math and science. On Pi Day, March 14 (for 3.14, the value of pi) Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) is treating students to a celebration of the world's most famous, never-ending number.

MATHCOUNTS mathletes form the symbol for pi at the Massachusetts state competition.

Raytheon will deliver chocolate chip cookie pies to select Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide and celebrate the fun facts about the irrational, mathematical constant.

The concept of pi, commonly used to calculate the area of a circle, is some 4,000 years old. Rounded up to 3.14, the actual number consists of infinite decimal values. The number represents the ratio of the distance around a circle (its circumference) to the distance across its center (its diameter). The area of the circle equals pi times the radius of the circle squared. Today, engineers and designers use pi for a wide variety of purposes, from calculating the areas of skins of aircrafts to designing pendulums for clocks.

Join Raytheon in showing the boys and girls in your life that there are infinite possibilities for celebrating pi:

  • Share our Pi Day fact sheet, infographic and video, found in our Pi Day toolkit
  • Bake a pie with the student in your life – a great example of fractions at work – and deliver it to a science, technology, engineering or math teacher to say "thank you"
  • Share your pictures and stories with Raytheon on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook with #piday and #mathmovesu.

Raytheon's Pi Day celebration is one slice of its $125 million commitment to science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, education through the company's MathMovesU® program. For the past decade, MathMovesU has been inspiring students to pursue STEM education and careers by engaging them in hands-on, interactive activities.
