The concept of pi, commonly used to calculate the area of a circle, is some 4,000 years old. Rounded up to 3.14, the actual number consists of infinite decimal values. The number represents the ratio of the distance around a circle (its circumference) to the distance across its center (its diameter). The area of the circle equals pi times the radius of the circle squared.
