Raytheon Company Helps Boston Globe Deliver Special Red Sox Commemorative Section to Troops in Iraq
WALTHAM, Mass., Nov. 3, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Raytheon Company is sponsoring a special commemorative section of the Boston Globe for our men and women in uniform in Iraq. With Raytheon's support, the Boston Globe will deliver 10,000 copies of the commemorative section to U.S. Armed Forces stationed in Iraq. "Raytheon has been based in the Boston area since 1922, so we know what it is to be Red Sox fans through the years of waiting -- and to finally win the World Series," said William H. Swanson, Raytheon's Chairman and CEO. "Nevertheless, all this pales next to the appreciation we feel for our men and women in uniform, who enable us to enjoy the fruits of liberty -- and the beginning of what will surely be an 86-year baseball dynasty." The section contains a special supplement that chronicles the team's historic journey through the years, culminating in its World Series Championship. Also included will be a copy of the Globe's Sports Section from Thursday, Oct. 28, the day after the Red Sox's sweep of the World Series. The special section is being sent to Iraq in response to inquiries from U.S. troops, many of whom are long-time Red Sox fans. Richard Gilman, publisher of the Boston Globe, praised Raytheon's effort to send the newspapers to our forces overseas, noting that, "newspapers continue to be the first draft of history. Fans here in Boston bought more than a million copies of the Globe as a memento on the day after the Sox clinched the Series. We're extremely happy that with Raytheon's generous help, a similar keepsake is going to our troops in Iraq." Distribution of the commemorative section is a joint effort of the Boston Globe and the Department of Defense Stars and Stripes newspaper, the daily newspaper for the Armed Forces stationed and deployed overseas. The commemorative section will be distributed by Stars and Stripes to bases and camps throughout Iraq.
