Raytheon's Falls Church, Va. Unit Attains Software Engineering Institute Level 3 Certification
FALLS CHURCH, Va., Nov. 29, 2004 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company's Intelligence and Information Systems (IIS) operation here recently attained the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI) Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) Maturity Level 3 rating for systems and software engineering. Carlos Galvan, a SEI-authorized CMMI lead appraiser at the Center for Systems Management, led an independent, third-party appraisal team that conducted the review. This latest achievement follows a long history of process improvement in Intelligence and Information Systems starting with the adoption of SEI's Software Capability Maturity Model in the early 1990s and later adoption of equivalent models for systems engineering. "This rating tells our customers and partners that our Falls Church operation successfully manages its processes, and that we're committed to delivering better solutions to our customers," said Mike Keebaugh, IIS president. "It also shows the quality and maturity of our processes, and that we can provide solutions more efficiently and effectively." CMMI is the newest standard for benchmarking the commercial and defense industry's best practices for product development. Raytheon has been a major contributor to the development of the CMMI model. CMMI levels are increasingly used by government agencies and contractors to evaluate the potential for organizations to produce quality products on time and within budget. The Maturity Level 3 rating indicates that the defined and documented processes for developing and maintaining products at Raytheon's Falls Church operation have been integrated into previously existing process documentation and is institutionalized at the site. Raytheon IIS employs more than 750 engineers at its Falls Church site, and the company provides superior solutions for defense and government customers, specializing in signal and image processing, geospatial intelligence, air- and space-borne command and control, ground engineering support, weather and environmental management, homeland security and information technology. IIS had 2003 sales of $2 billion, and employs 8,600 professionals at major sites here, in Aurora, Colo., and Garland, Texas, its headquarters. Raytheon has a three-pronged approach to achieving process excellence: Integrated Product Development System, an integrated set of best practices tailored for the entire product life-cycle; Raytheon Six Sigma(TM), tools that deliver value and integrate best practices for continuous process improvement; and CMMI, process requirements and appraisal methods for creating, measuring, managing and improving specific processes to assess process maturity. The SEI is a federally funded research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense and operated by Carnegie Mellon University. The center establishes the reference model against which software development processes are measured. CMMI(R) is registered in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office by Carnegie Mellon University. Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), with 2003 sales of $18.1 billion, is an industry leader in defense and government electronics, space, information technology, technical services and business and special mission aircraft. With headquarters in Waltham, Mass., Raytheon employs 78,000 people worldwide. Contact: Patrick McKenna 972.205.7121 SOURCE: Raytheon Company Web site: http://www.raytheon.com/
