Raytheon Achieves CMMI Level 3 Rating at its Pasadena Operation
RESTON, Va., Dec. 17, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Raytheon Company has attained a Maturity Level 3 rating for technical and scientific services as defined by the Software Engineering Institute (SEISM) Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI(R) -- SE/SW, V1.1) at its operation in Pasadena, Calif. The results of the successful appraisal positions the Pasadena, Calif., operation of Raytheon Technical Services Company LLC (RTSC) as one of the leading organizations in the services sector to achieve CMMI Maturity Level 3. The appraisal team, led by independent third-party appraiser John Ryskowski, conducted extensive interviews with Pasadena employees and reviewed objective evidence for four focus projects representing the work performed for NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) by approximately 140 Raytheon engineers and scientists. In announcing the results of the appraisal, Ryskowski indicated it is a unique accomplishment. "This is truly an advancement for the services business and the CMMI," Ryskowski said. "The use of the CMMI to measure process improvement in this manner is the stuff industry white papers are made for-publishing revolutionary advances in technical scientific services practices." "We are pleased to have our Raytheon partner in Pasadena achieve this significant milestone," commented retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Gene Tattini, deputy director of JPL. "This accomplishment demonstrates a high level of process focus and increased customer alignment for the products and services we receive from one of our key contractors." "This significant achievement by our Pasadena operation is another example of RTSC driving process improvements to benefit our customers," said John Gatti, RTSC vice president of engineering, technology, quality and program performance. "Using the CMMI in this groundbreaking method-one suitable for the services industry-enables us to rapidly replicate the process in other areas of Raytheon and RTSC, and more importantly, to assist our customers around the world." "The CMMI Level 3 rating in Pasadena demonstrates our creative approach to solving problems and adopting the principles of continual improvement," stated Paul Thompson, general manager of one of RTSC's Reston, Va.-based business units, which includes the Pasadena operation. "It is also a tribute to the exceptional talent and dedication of our professionals in Pasadena." The Pasadena CMMI effort is particularly notable because of the deployment approach. Starting from a grass roots effort, and using the Raytheon Six SigmaTM framework, the employees designed a solution based on templates used while performing work to document and exercise key processes of the business. The templates, which effectively encapsulate the requirements of the CMMI process areas, are "CMMI Level 3 compliant" and are used by the engineers, scientists and information technology professionals supporting NASA/Caltech JPL. Once completed, the templates serve as a record of performance and objective evidence that meets the criteria for a successful CMMI Level 3 appraisal. CMMI maturity levels are increasingly used by government agencies and contractors to evaluate the potential for organizations to produce quality products on time and within budget. The independent appraisers reviewed Pasadena operations using the prescribed Standard CMMISM Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPISM). In Pasadena, RTSC employees design, develop and operate complex science, data and advanced information systems for NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
