Raytheon Delivers Web-Based Applications to Mobile Users in Industry-First Milestone
MARLBOROUGH, Mass., Oct. 7, 2009 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), in collaboration with the U.S. Army's Communications Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center, recently completed industry-first experiments using Raytheon's fourth generation wireless networking technology.
The Enhanced Position Location Reporting System 4th Generation served as the network backbone and provided the ability to connect with many current and future force systems as part of an overarching network-of-networks architecture.
Mobile platoons used secure, real-time wireless access to Web-based services previously available only at fixed locations. By extending the Army's Warfighter Information Network-Tactical network to mobile platforms, platoons accessed e-mail, talked with one another, exchanged imagery and interacted with the Tactical Ground System.
"For the first time, we have demonstrated the ability to connect Web-based applications in a mobile environment where previously no secure infrastructure existed," said Jerry Powlen, vice president, Raytheon's Integrated Communications Systems. "The EPLRS-4G will help protect our warfighters and provide them with real-time, high-speed intelligence and communication that they can share with one another. This enhancement secures EPLRS' place as the Department of Defense's most modern, mobile wireless ad-hoc network for years to come."
Raytheon Company, with 2008 sales of $23.2 billion, is a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, homeland security and other government markets throughout the world. With a history of innovation spanning 87 years, Raytheon provides state-of-the-art electronics, mission systems integration and other capabilities in the areas of sensing; effects; and command, control, communications and intelligence systems, as well as a broad range of mission support services. With headquarters in Waltham, Mass., Raytheon employs 73,000 people worldwide.
Note to Editors:
Raytheon continues to evolve EPLRS-4G. In 2009, Raytheon modernized the National Security Agency-approved security device and extended the network's frequency range. Raytheon plans to push the terminal rate to 2Mbps for a robust16Mbps of mobile ad-hoc networked bandwidth. EPLRS-4G uses advanced cognitive networking protocols such as dynamic spectrum access, disruption tolerant networking and content oriented inter-Networking.
Mobile ad-hoc networking protocols are software-defined algorithms used to route data in a highly mobile, wireless communication network without a fixed infrastructure. Work is underway to incorporate the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's dynamic spectrum access techniques for additional flexibility and capability.
Tactical Ground Reporting is an information-centric application that provides data collection and reporting capabilities to Army users, enabling company and platoon-level knowledge sharing.
