Washington, D.C., air traffic controller receives inaugural Raytheon safety award

Melvin Davis honored for advancing NextGen safety initiatives

LAS VEGAS, March 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) presented its first-ever air traffic control safety award to Washington, D.C., controller Melvin Davis for bringing aviation industry stakeholders together to ensure safe operations in the National Airspace System.

The award was presented at the annual National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA) "Communicating for Safety" conference. Davis is NATCA's chief representative for the Next Generation air transportation modernization effort.

"We want to thank Mel Davis for what he's doing in the name of aviation safety," said Michael Espinola, director of Domestic Automation Systems in Raytheon's Network Centric Systems business. "All of us have an interest in coming together to keep U.S. skies the safest in the world, and he has been an instrumental part of that."

At the same NATCA conference, Raytheon is exhibiting an FAA-approved design of the latest variant of the automation platform known as the Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System, or STARS. The variant is called STARS ELITE, and it will be used in small and medium airports to usher in NextGen benefits that are not currently available at those facilities.

Raytheon, whose air traffic management technologies control airplanes in more than 50 countries, was recently named "Most Influential Company" at an international aerospace gathering in India.
