Raytheon Launches New Externship Program to Broaden Teachers' Perspective on Math and Science Education

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., June 16, 2006 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company has launched a teacher externship program at its Network Centric Systems (NCS) facility in Marlborough, Mass.

Developed in partnership with Leadership Initiatives for Teaching and Technology (LIFT2), the externship provides teachers a unique opportunity to learn about the latest trends in technology. With exposure to critical industry applications including science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through "real world" projects, the externship helps teachers prepare for enriched classroom instruction.

At Raytheon, a teacher's experience includes hands-on, full-time work in the company's engineering department supporting numerous NCS customer solutions, including satellite communications. At the externship's conclusion, candidates will apply skills learned on the job toward developing a curriculum to help cultivate a technology pipeline for the future.

"The externship provides the stage for cutting edge technology to shift from the boardroom to the classroom," said Jerry Powlen, vice president, Integrated Communications Systems. "Focus on math and science education is a priority for Raytheon, distinguished by the teacher externship and other programs like our MathMovesU effort."

Raytheon's first externship candidate is Wayland High School, Wayland, Mass., physics teacher and Science Department Head Kenneth H. Altshuler. He holds numerous professional awards including "Outstanding High School Teacher of Physics Award" from the American Association of Physics Teachers, and he was selected as one of 26 (from a field of more than 3,000) National Endowment Fellowship Recipients included in the Council for Basic Education's "Minds Alive -- Teachers as Scholars" book on academic excellence. Altshuler has produced several technology-related presentations and publications and has many professional affiliations supporting STEM topics.

Raytheon Network Centric Systems' Marlborough, Mass., site is the headquarters for the Airspace Management and Homeland Security, Command and Control Systems and Integrated Communications Systems business areas. Northeast Engineering is the largest organization in the facility, providing systems, software and hardware designs for the three business areas.

Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), with 2005 sales of $21.9 billion, is an industry leader in defense and government electronics, space, information technology, technical services, and business and special mission aircraft. With headquarters in Waltham, Mass., Raytheon employs 80,000 people worldwide.

Note to Editors:

In addition to externships in the high-tech industry, LIFT2 offers middle school and high school STEM teachers a professional education experience that includes graduate course work and leadership team development.

According to LIFT2 Program Director David Cedrone, "Through partnerships with leading engineering technology companies, we are able to provide important insight into career opportunities in engineering fields and realize our ultimate goal of improving student learning in math, science, technology and engineering."
