Raytheon Achieves Software Engineering CMMI Level 4 Rating at its Indianapolis Operation
RESTON, Va., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has attained a Level 4 rating for software engineering as defined by the Software Engineering Institute's (SEI(SM)) Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI(R)) at another of its operations. The results of the successful appraisal place Raytheon Technical Services Company LLC's (RTSC) Indianapolis operation within an elite group as one of only 50 companies worldwide that have obtained a CMMI Level 4 or 5. The appraisal team, led by independent third-party appraiser John Ryskowski, conducted extensive interviews with Indianapolis employees and reviewed more than 3,800 artifacts, covering all the programs in the operation that perform software development. In announcing the results of the appraisal, Ryskowski was complimentary of the multi-level support for process improvement he encountered in this effort and the relatively short period of time involved in completing the preparation for the appraisal. "Long-term relationships can often burden change, but that was not the case here," Ryskowski said. "In addition, while the newness of some of the processes is apparent, the completeness of their adoption is also apparent." "This significant achievement by our Indianapolis operation is another step forward in our drive to provide real process improvements for the benefit of our customers," stated John Gatti, RTSC vice president of engineering, technology, quality and program performance. "CMMI is a critical element of our systems approach to enable us to deliver predictable quality while effectively managing risk. The successful Software Level 4 appraisal is a significant accomplishment that would not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our employees and the support of Raytheon's North Texas organization, which previously attained CMMI Level 5 for software engineering and Level 3 for systems engineering." CMMI maturity levels are increasingly used by government agencies and contractors to evaluate the potential for organizations to produce quality products on time and within budget. The independent appraisers reviewed software engineering using the prescribed Standard CMMI(SM) Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI(SM)). "The CMMI Level 4 rating reflects the disciplined but flexible software engineering approach that we apply to a wide variety of project types and sizes," stated Robert Butcher, general manager of RTSC's Indianapolis operation. "It is also a tribute to the exceptional talent and customer-focus of our engineering personnel. Driven by the goal of providing superior customer satisfaction, they continually pursue process improvements such as CMMI that realize increased cost-effectiveness, improved delivery schedules, and high quality."
