Raytheon BBN Awarded $5.2 Million in Research Funding to Enable Early Awareness of Emerging Technology

Program to create analysis tools to identify connections between emerging technical trends before they are fully developed

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Dec. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon BBN Technologies (BBN) has been awarded $5.2 million by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) under the Foresight and Understanding from Scientific Exposition (FUSE) program. BBN is a wholly owned subsidiary of Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN).

The goal of the FUSE program is to develop automated methods that assist analysts and subject-matter experts in recognizing emerging technologies in published scientific, technical and patent literature. (See http://www.iarpa.gov/solicitations_fuse.html.)  According to the solicitation, IARPA envisions a FUSE system that will be able to:

1.     Process the world's massive, growing and multilingual collection of full-text scientific, technical and patent literature.
2.     Organize related technical concepts and automatically generate, validate and prioritize areas of greatest importance.
3.     Offer multilingual capabilities.

Under the contract, Raytheon BBN Technologies will develop a system that uses analytical techniques and algorithms to automatically recognize related topics within a variety of printed materials. Next, the BBN system will identify those areas that are most likely to develop into major and wide-ranging technical solutions. With this targeted information, important emerging technologies will be much easier to identify.

"BBN is a leader in developing analytical techniques and algorithms for language technologies," said Lance Ramshaw, FUSE program manager for Raytheon BBN Technologies. "We have a long and successful track record of providing cutting-edge solutions to our customers, and we are highly confident in our ability to provide the tools needed to help our government maintain the highest level of technical vigilance throughout the globe and across all technical domains."
