Raytheon AFATDS Receives Top 5 Department of Defense Program Award for Systems Engineering

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., Nov. 2, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company's (NYSE: RTN) Advanced Field Artillery Data System (AFATDS) program has been recognized by the Department of Defense and the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) as a 2006 Top 5 DoD program award winner for Systems Engineering.

AFATDS is the Army's system of record for planning, coordinating and controlling all mortars, close air support, naval gunfire, attack helicopters, offensive electronic warfare, field artillery cannons, rockets and guided missiles.

The Top 5 DoD award recognizes excellence in the application of systems engineering that results in highly successful programs. Members from Raytheon's joint government-industry team were presented with the award during NDIA's 10th Annual Systems Engineering Conference in San Diego.

"This is the second time the AFATDS program has been recognized with this award, and the third award Raytheon has received in the past four years," said Jack Harrington, vice president of Command and Control Systems at Raytheon's Network Centric Systems. "Our partnership with our government team and the continued focus on sound, systems engineering principles and processes are core to our mission assurance commitment to the warfighter."

During Operation Iraqi Freedom, AFATDS directed more than 35,000 rounds of munitions, 857 rockets, and 453 long-range missiles safely to their targets, while preventing fratricide and the loss of friendly aircraft.

AFATDS' rigid adherence to high standards guides the systems engineering and software development processes. Raytheon uses the Capability Maturity Model ® processes, the Raytheon Integrated Product Development System, Raytheon Six Sigma ™ and incremental additions of new functionality to assure that the program meets its approximately 5,000 system requirements and 8,500 software requirements.
